Facing the Catholic cathedral, an even older door. Dangbé, the sacred python, has been waiting here for those who know not to fear.
In Ouidah, two worlds face each other on the same square. On one side, the basilica of the Immaculate Conception. On the other, the Python Temple, dedicated to Dangbé, one of the oldest forces in the local Vodun pantheon. This is not an architectural coincidence. It sums up the entire history of this city: two traditions installed side by side, neither ever silencing the other.
Dangbé is associated with gentleness, fertility and the protection of the home. The royal python that embodies it is not venomous, and that is precisely what the temple teaches those who take the time to listen: power does not need to threaten to be real. The guardians of the place can explain how these animals, far from being feared, are fed, carried, respected as members of the community.
What most visitors never see is what the temple reveals to those who come accompanied by a guide who knows the guardians by name, not just by function: the bond between Dangbé and the families of Ouidah who, for generations, have passed down the responsibility for this cult. Legba opened this door long ago. It remains open to those who find it with the right guide.
