What's the difference between After Vodundays and the official government Vodundays?

The official Vodundays (January 7-9) are a mass festival organized by the Beninese state: public processions, open-air ceremonies, tens of thousands of local and tourist participants. After Vodundays begins right after, in deliberately small teams of 10 (Standard) or 5 (VIP): access to closed ritual spaces, meetings with tradition-guardians in their own places, restricted ceremonies. The Vodundays are the public spectacle. After Vodundays is the privileged access.

Question 3

Can you take part in both, Vodundays and After Vodundays?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is in fact one single experience. The After Vodundays program (January 6 to 10, official core on the 7th, 8th and 9th) starts with the official Vodundays (Legba processions, public Zangbeto ceremonies, the Vodun market, Chacha square), then continues with After Vodundays access once the crowd has left. ONG Wa Afriki accompanies both phases without a break, from the moment you land in Cotonou.

How many participants are accepted per edition?

Accepted Answer

There is no round marketing cap: the program runs in reproducible teams of 10 people in Standard (1 certified guide + 1 lead host) or 5 in VIP (dedicated, tighter guidance). It is a structural constraint, not a sales pitch: access to guardian families, restricted ceremonies and intimate encounters cannot support mass groups, which is why teams are never mixed with one another.

Do you need to practice Vodun to take part?

Accepted Answer

No prior belief or practice is required. After Vodundays welcomes Vodun believers, Candomblé or Haitian Vodou practitioners, agnostics, atheists, researchers, artists and curious travelers. The only requirement: respect for what is sacred. The ceremonies you attend are real, not staged for tourists.

What unites every participant: genuine curiosity, not a desire for touristic consumption.

Yes. Circuit 365 gives access to Ouidah year-round, 365 days a year, outside the Vodundays. Maximum 25 participants, flexible duration of 5 to 30 days. The Custom program (max 8 participants) is also available year-round for the most personalized experiences.

Is Benin a safe country for foreign tourists?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Benin ranks among the most stable countries in West Africa. According to the 2024 Global Peace Index (Institute for Economics and Peace), Benin ranks 54th out of 163 countries, ahead of many European countries. It has had no coup d'état since 1991. The African Union Commission regularly cites it as a model of democratic stability in Sub-Saharan Africa. Ouidah in particular is a peaceful city, built around its families and its tradition. Crime there is almost non-existent.

Do the Sahel tensions in northern Benin affect Ouidah?

No. The security tensions in the Sahel concern the northern zone of Benin (Alibori, Atacora, areas near Burkina Faso and Niger), 600-700 km from Ouidah. French, Belgian and Canadian travel advisories formally advise against those northern zones. Southern Benin (Cotonou, Ouidah, Abomey, Ganvie, Grand-Popo), on the other hand, is rated normal vigilance, the same as many classic tourist destinations. The After Vodundays program takes place entirely in the safe South.

Benin is one of the most positively cited West African destinations among women traveling alone. Beninese communities give women an important place in Vodun tradition (the Vodunsi, women Hounon, lineage chiefs). Street harassment exists as it does in any city in the world, but at low intensity in Ouidah. Within After Vodundays, every female participant is part of a guided group and hosted with selected families.

Are LGBTQ+ participants safe in Benin?

Accepted Answer

Benin has no legislation explicitly criminalizing homosexuality (unlike many African or American countries), but it is a conservative society where public displays of affection between same-sex people are socially discouraged. LGBTQ+ participants have taken part in After Vodundays with no reported incident. Discretion is recommended in public settings. ONG Wa Afriki welcomes everyone without discrimination.

Can you drink tap water in Ouidah?

No. Tap water in Benin is not safe for visitors to drink. Sealed bottled water or filtered water only. After Vodundays partner accommodations provide bottled drinking water. Food prepared by host families is cooked, very low food risk. Avoid unpasteurized fruit juices in markets during the first week.

Accepted Answer

Benin offers an e-visa available online through the official portal evisa.gouv.bj for most nationalities worldwide. Processing takes 72 hours, valid for 30 or 90 days, cost around $55-75 depending on duration. ECOWAS nationals (West Africa) do not need a visa. Visa on arrival is also available at Cotonou airport for most non-ECOWAS nationalities, but the online e-visa is faster and avoids lines. Yes. Can you import food products and spices from Benin into your home country?

Food products are subject to the phytosanitary regulations of the destination country (EU, USA, Canada). General rule: dry spices (Grand-Popo pepper, soumbala, Guinea pepper), aromatic herbs and dry grains are generally allowed. Technically yes. In practice, driving in Benin is not recommended for travelers unfamiliar with local road rules (heavy traffic in Cotonou, unmarked laterite roads outside towns, zemidjans everywhere). Vodun ceremonies often take place in the evening or at night. ONG Wa Afriki organizes all night transport for its participants: vehicle with driver, an escort, safe return to accommodation. You never travel alone at night to a ceremony site. The evening program is shared every morning with the gathering time and mode of transport.

The Cloboto Tour is the guided circuit designed and operated by ONG Wa Afriki: it connects Ouidah's major sites in the right order, with commentary in four languages (French, English, German, Spanish). The circuits currently operate in guided vehicles. Ouidah's Little Train is the name of this same project's next stage: a tourist train under development, designed around Tricycle Pablo-type motorized convoys with fitted 18-seat trailers, whose investor dossier is open on our Vision 2030 page. Simple, clean room: bed, mosquito net provided, fan or air conditioning depending on the household. Shared or private bathroom depending on the family. This is not Cotonou's four-star comfort, it is authentic, functional, clean. The house is often a traditional compound: a central courtyard surrounded by rooms. The morning starts in the courtyard with coffee and the first conversations with the family. That is when the immersion truly begins.

Electricity: yes, generally available, occasional short outages possible (220V, European outlets). A universal adapter and a portable battery are recommended. Wi-Fi: rarely available in family homes, use a local MTN or Moov SIM card instead (4G available in Ouidah, SIM available at the airport). Hot water: depends on the family. Cold showers are the norm in Benin's heat, and pleasant at 28°C.
