Your DNA test says Benin.
Ouidah is waiting.

40 million people in the African diaspora have taken a DNA test. Millions received a result pointing to West Africa. You are not alone. And your return is possible.

40 million

People in the African diaspora who took a DNA test (Ancestry, 23andMe, MyHeritage)

12.4 million

Africans deported through the transatlantic slave trade between the 16th and 19th centuries

1.3 million

Estimated to have passed through Ouidah, the "Liverpool of slavery"

01

You took the test

Ancestry, 23andMe, MyHeritage, and the result says Benin, Nigeria, Togo, Ghana. You have a percentage. A number. But not yet a story.

02

You look for the meaning

That DNA test didn't give you your lineage name, your guardian deity, or the memory of your ancestors. It gave you a postcard. After Vodundays is the destination.

03

You come to Ouidah

The city through which millions of Africans crossed the Atlantic. The place of the fracture, and today, the place of return. Your DNA told you where you come from. Ouidah tells you who you are.

04

You leave whole

A lineage name, if possible. A memorial reconciliation ritual. The Door of No Return crossed in the other direction. A belonging no one can take from you.

A memorial reconciliation ritual

At the Door of No Return, on Ouidah's beach. Rituals organized specifically for the diaspora, to honor the ancestors and close the fracture.

A Fa reading

The Fa is Vodun's divinatory oracle, a science of spiritual identity thousands of years old. A bokonon can identify your birth sign, your guardian deity, your spiritual lineage.

Walking the Slave Route

Physically walking the route your ancestors walked, in the opposite direction, is an act of memory that no museum, no book, no algorithm can replicate.

A diaspora community

After Vodundays brings together Haitians, Brazilians, African Americans, Caribbeans, all on the road back. You will not be alone on this journey.

My DNA test says 'Benin / Togo / Nigeria', am I really from Ouidah?

Maybe. The Beninese coast, and Ouidah in particular, was one of the main departure ports of the transatlantic slave trade. Millions of men and women embarked from this beach. Your DNA says 'West Africa', Ouidah sits at the heart of that region. Coming here means coming to the most likely point of origin.

Can After Vodundays help me trace my exact lineage?

Exact genealogy across several centuries is rare. But After Vodundays organizes diaspora talking circles with bokonons (Fa diviners) able to identify spiritual lineages, which is often deeper than a family name.

Do I need to know about Vodun to take part?

No. No prior knowledge is required. After Vodundays is built to welcome the global African diaspora, including those who never heard of Vodun before their DNA test.

I'm Haitian / Brazilian / American, is After Vodundays for me?

Yes. After Vodundays is designed precisely for the diaspora. Haitians, Brazilians, African Americans, Caribbeans, all share roots in this region. Ouidah's language will speak to you even if you've never learned it.

How far in advance should I book?

After Vodundays organizes its January teams several months ahead. Places fill up before each edition. We recommend registering at least 4 months before departure.
