Ouidah's Catholic basilica does not tell only a story of evangelization. Part of its style, like many buildings in the city center, bears the signature of the Agouda, the descendants of freed slaves who returned from Brazil in the 19th century with a building know-how that left a lasting mark on the city.
Its position facing the Python Temple is no accident of colonial town planning: it is the visual summary of what Ouidah has always been, a place where several spiritual worlds settled side by side without either erasing the other.
For the diaspora in search of roots, this building is one more landmark in reading the Brazilian city of Ouidah, alongside the balconied houses and the Maro and Zomachi quarters built by the same returnee families.
