Zomaï, where the light does not go. One of the detention stations of the Slave Route, a name that already says everything that happened here.
Along the four kilometers separating central Ouidah from the ocean, the Slave Route crosses several stations where captives were held before boarding. The Zomaï Enclosure is one of them, and its name, literally the place where fire does not go, sums up the nature of the site: a space of confinement and darkness.
Today, the site is a space of silence and recollection. It does not seek to dramatize the pain it documents. That is precisely why guidance matters: without context, a lone visitor crosses a silent enclosure without grasping its real weight.
