On the coast of Ouidah, facing the ocean that saw so many captives depart for the Americas, Mami Wata rules over the waters. This deity, associated with prosperity, beauty and the mystery of the deep, is one of the most widely recognized forces of the Vodun pantheon, in Benin as across the entire Atlantic diaspora.
The cult of Mami Wata crossed the Atlantic with remarkable continuity: Yemanjá in Brazil, La Sirène in Haiti, Yemayá in Cuba, so many faces of one same sovereign of the waters. Few examples illustrate as clearly how much the crossing did not erase the tradition, it merely redeployed it.
For the diaspora in search of roots, encountering the cult of Mami Wata in Ouidah, a few meters from the Door of No Return, closes a circle that three centuries of history had left open.
