Zomachi is one of the quarters of Ouidah marked by the settlement of the Agouda, the descendants of freed slaves who returned from Brazil in the 19th century. Like the Maro quarter, it carries in its built fabric and organization the memory of this unique Atlantic round trip in West Africa.
Walking through it with a guide who knows the quarter's families completely changes the reading of the facades: every balconied house, every architectural detail tells a story of return, rebuilding, memory passed on rather than erased.
It is one of the least shown faces of Ouidah to passing visitors, precisely because it does not read itself without someone to tell it.
