The Zangbeto is one of the most recognizable faces of Vodun in Ouidah: a conical straw silhouette that appears in the streets, spinning at a bewildering speed, embodying a very real function beyond the spectacle, that of guardian of order and security of the neighborhoods, a traditional police force that predates any modern administration.
What the Zangbeto represents is not limited to the nighttime appearances visitors occasionally cross paths with. It is a community institution, with its own hierarchy, initiates and rules. What the form conceals, and how the entity moves, are among the questions only initiates answer, and never fully.
