The city
Cotonou is no postcard town, and that is its strength. It is the economic heart of Benin, a city that never sleeps, criss-crossed by the endless dance of the zemidjans, the motorbike taxis that set the tempo. At its centre sprawls the Dantokpa international market, over eighteen hectares along the lagoon, reputed to be the largest open-air market in West Africa. You will find the finest wax fabrics, spices, and the section of ritual plants and objects where initiates come to stock up.
Its modern face reads along the Marina Boulevard, where the Amazon statue now rises, thirty metres of bronze that have become the country's emblem and the first photo stop for every traveller. In the Haie Vive district, the Zinsou Foundation shows the continent's greatest contemporary artists for free. And fifteen minutes away, from the Abomey-Calavi landing, pirogues carry you to Ganvié, the lake city where more than thirty thousand people live on stilts above Lake Nokoué. Cotonou is the gateway: the place where the After Vodundays journey almost always begins.
