The city
Dassa-Zoumè offers one of the most spectacular landscapes of central Benin: the town is ringed by a string of granite domes, the forty-one hills that gave it its nickname. This unique relief makes Dassa a land of double spirituality, where the royal and ancestral cults of the Idaasha kingdom, tucked into the rock crevices, meet the greatest Marian fervour in West Africa.
Each August, the grotto of Notre-Dame d'Arigbo, a natural sanctuary at the foot of the rocks, gathers tens of thousands of pilgrims from across the sub-region. The rest of the year, Dassa is a hiking ground: the trails winding between the hills lead to breathtaking viewpoints over the plain, to the perched village of Oké-Owo and to old traditional worship sites. It is the ideal stop, halfway, to gain some height between the south and north of the country.

You climb, at your own pace, the granite hills that ring the town. At the top the plain opens as far as the eye can see. The effort is gentle, the reward immense: Benin seen from above, in the silence, far from everything. The kind of moment you keep for a long time.
