The city
Kandi is the capital of the Alibori, in the far north of Benin. A town with a Sahelian air, hot and sprawling, it lives off the savannah: cotton, the country's white gold, and cattle herding. It is the land of the nomadic Peulh herders. In the camps nearby, you discover an age-old pastoral way of life, centred on the care of zebu herds, milking, and the art of body adornment and tattoo.
Kandi is above all the northern gateway to the W-Arly-Pendjari complex, and to its W National Park, named after the meanders of the Niger river. This cross-border biosphere reserve shelters wildlife rare in West Africa: elephants, lions, buffalo, hippos, baboons and a multitude of migratory birds. Access to the northern parks is under the strict framing of licensed guides and conservation authorities, according to the security conditions of the moment. Kandi is the call of the great open spaces, the safari and the pastoral life of the Beninese Sahel.
