Nature, a change of scene
The city
Nestled in a green valley at the foot of the Atacora range, Natitingou is the jewel of nature and culture tourism in the north. It is the starting point for the Koutammakou country, a cultural landscape inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, land of the Batammariba people. There stand the Tata Somba, those two-storey earth dwellings that are true miniature fortresses, built to shelter the family, the livestock and the granaries, and to withstand invasion.
In Natitingou itself, the regional museum, housed in the former colonial prefecture, offers the best introduction to the cosmogony, the architecture and the initiation rites of the Atacora. All around, nature reigns: the Kota and Tanougou falls drop into pools where you can swim, in a gallery forest, and the Atacora ridges lend themselves to great hiking. Here you sleep on the rooftop terrace of a Tata Somba, under the stars. It is the ultimate change of scene, the longest stop and often the most memorable of the journey.
What you'll experience
Unique night · Exclusivity
Sleep on the roof of a Tata Somba
You spend the night on the terrace of a Batammariba earth castle, under the stars, welcomed by a Koutammakou family. This is no hotel, it is a shared privilege, in a UNESCO-listed heritage. The memory you still talk about months after the return.
A night with the family, coordinated by the NGO. Each stay sustains the host family.
Nature · Wonder
Swim beneath the Kota falls
After the walk, you plunge into the pools of the Kota falls, in the heart of a gallery forest. The cool water, the rock, the silence: the reward of the north, earned by sweat and savoured with no one else around.
A preserved natural site, access and safety managed by locals who know it.
Culture · Meaning
Read the Atacora at the regional museum
Before entering the Batammariba country, your host opens the regional museum for you: cosmogony, architecture, initiation rites. You no longer visit earth houses, you understand an entire vision of the world, carried by an architecture.
The reading key that turns a simple visit into deep understanding.

This stop is part of our circuits
The Batammariba country is respected before it is admired. Our hosts arrange the night in a Tata Somba with the families, the swim at the Kota falls and the ridge hike. The stop people still talk about months later.
