Preparing your trip

When is the best time to visit Benin?

Benin can be visited all year round, but not in the same way. The climate of the south, where Ouidah lies, follows four seasons; the north knows only two. And one moment outweighs all the others: the first half of January, when the whole country celebrates Vodun.

What is the best time to visit Benin?

From December to March, the long dry season. Roads are passable everywhere, skies are clear, and it is the time of the Vodun Days, in January. This is the period we recommend for a first trip, and the one in which the After Vodundays programme takes place.

What are the seasons in southern Benin?

The south has two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. The long dry season runs from December to March; the long rainy season from April to mid-July; a short dry season sets in from mid-July to mid-September; the short rainy season follows, until November. Rain falls in heavy, short showers, rarely all day long.

And in northern Benin?

The north has a single rainy season, from May or June to October, and a long dry season for the rest of the year. For the Atacora and the northern parks, the dry season is the most comfortable. Always check your country's travel advice before setting dates in the north.

What is the harmattan?

A dry wind from the Sahara, blowing mostly from December to February. It brings a haze of fine dust, cooler mornings and very dry air. Bring something to moisturise skin and lips, and eye drops if you wear contact lenses.

What is the temperature in Benin?

It is hot all year in the south, with days around 27 to 33 °C and high humidity. March and April are the heaviest months. The sun is intense even under clouds: sun protection and water at all times.

When are the Vodun Days?

The official 2027 Vodun Days run from 2 to 9 January, with the Great Ceremony on Friday 8 January in Ouidah. It is the high point of the year: accommodation goes early, and you need to plan several months ahead. The After Vodundays programme runs from 4 to 14 January 2027.

What to see depending on the season?

From November to February, sea turtles nest on the Grand-Popo coast: night patrols and baby turtle releases, supervised by the guardians of the shoreline. In the dry season, the lagoon and Lake Nokoué are best explored by dugout canoe. Off season, Ouidah is calmer and greener, and time with the guardian families stretches out.
