What budget for a trip to Benin?

The FCFA. How to get it, how to spend it, how much to plan beyond the program. Transparent about the numbers.

What does an After Vodundays program cost?

For the Vodun Days: fixed, public rates, per person, nights included, all-inclusive at the Palais d'Agondji, three formulas. Standard (team of 10): €750 (The Core, January 7 to 9, 3 days) · €1,590 (The Programme, January 4 to 10, 7 days and 6 nights) · €1,790 (Vodun Days Week, January 2 to 9, 8 days and 7 nights). VIP (team of 5): €1,750 · €3,390 · €3,790. Options added to The Programme: + €700 (Standard) or + €1,100 (VIP) for historic Benin, + €950 for Togo and Ghana, + €890 (Standard) or + €1,650 (VIP) for year-end at the Palais d'Agondji. For an organised group, one place is free for every ten paid places: the place of the person who brings the group together. Circuit 365 and Custom remain on personalized quote, built around your profile, duration and options, price shared within 24 hours of a contact request. After Vodundays is positioned as a premium experience: the value is not in the number of sites visited, it is in the quality of access.

What currency is used in Benin and how do you get it?

Currency: the West African CFA Franc (FCFA or XOF). Fixed rate since 1999: 655.957 FCFA = 1 euro. 1 USD is roughly 600-620 FCFA depending on the market. Euros and dollars are refused in almost every Beninese business, you need FCFA. Sources: ATMs in Cotonou (Visa and Mastercard work), a currency exchange counter at the airport, MTN MoMo or Moov Mobile Money for local transfers. Notify your bank before departure.

What payment methods are accepted to book After Vodundays?

ONG Wa Afriki accepts: international bank transfer (IBAN: BJ0670150950910000233343, UBA Benin, SWIFT/BIC: COBBBJBJ, beneficiary: WA AFRIKI), MTN MoMo Mobile Money (+229 01 61 70 36 66) for African residents. Card payment will open once this channel is tested and confirmed. A deposit confirms the booking, 30% in Standard, 50% in VIP (the commitment to dedicated logistics is made from the moment of booking), fully refundable for 30 days in both cases, as stated in the Pact of Ouidah. An official receipt is issued for every payment.

What extra budget should I plan for personal spending during the stay?

Lodging, meals and local transport are included in the price, in both Standard and VIP. Just plan for your personal spending. Suggested budget for the full programme (January 4 to 14, 11 days): souvenirs and crafts 20,000 to 100,000 FCFA (about €30 to €150), personal drinks and snacks 9,000 to 25,000 FCFA, contributions during ceremonies 2,000 to 5,000 FCFA in total. Suggested total: 31,000 to 130,000 FCFA (about €47 to €195) in extra spending, to adjust downward for The Core or The Programme.

Are there ATMs in Ouidah?

Ouidah has a few ATMs (UBA, BOA, SGBSS), they work with international Visa and Mastercard cards but can occasionally be out of service. Recommendation: withdraw FCFA in Cotonou at the airport or at a UBA ATM in town before heading to Ouidah. Bring enough FCFA in cash for the first 2-3 days.

Is tipping practiced in Benin?

Tipping is not a codified institution in Benin as in Anglo-Saxon countries, but it is appreciated for exceptional service. Within After Vodundays: a gesture toward your guide (5,000 to 10,000 FCFA for a full program) is very appreciated. Host families are paid directly by the NGO. A practical gift rather than a sum of money is often valued more culturally.
